Photo collage of Black women suffragettes showing the portraits of these powerful activists who organized over 100 years ago to secure the rights to vote for all women in general and Black women in particular. Pictured from right to left are Ida B. Wells an anti-lynching, and women's rights advocate of the late 1800's, Fannie Barrier a Chicago activists and advocate for women's rights to vote and racial equality for black people, bottom left: Sojourner Truth was an American abolitionist and women's rights activist. Truth was born into slavery in Swartekill, New York, but escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826. After going to court to recover her son in 1828, she became the first black woman to win such a case against a white man.
These pioneers of Civil and Women's rights are depicted in sepia tones along with photos of Nannie Burroughs holding the emblem of Banner State Women's National Baptist Convention, c. 1905-15. Burroughs was a religious leader, educator, and civil and women's rights activist. She founded the National Training School for Women and Girls, Washington, D.C., under the sponsorship of the National Baptist Convention. In 1886, the National Baptist Convention was organized to reduce the influence of white Baptists on African American churches and to address the issues faced by black people. It would take until the 1964 Voting Rights Act for Black people to be guaranteed the right to vote. Museum-quality posters made on thick and durable matte paper.
