Truth was born into slavery in Swartekill, New York, but escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826. Burroughs was a religious leader, educator, and civil and women's rights activist. She founded the National Training School for Women and Girls, Washington, D.C., under the sponsorship of the National Baptist Convention. In 1886, the National Baptist Convention was organized to reduce the influence of white Baptists on African American churches and to address the issues faced by black people.
